State employees who work downtown asked to take extra safety measures

MADISON (WKOW) -- Department of Administration employees who work in downtown offices are being asked to take extra safety measures ahead of possible protests this weekend at the state Capitol in Madison.

A memo sent to Department of Administration employees Thursday by Secretary Joel Brennan noted increased security measures, such asboarding up windows at the Capitoland increased law enforcement presence.

"DOA colleagues who do not have the ability to work remotely and must continue to work in our facilities should be cognizant of their surroundings and any unusual activities or unfamiliar people around them," read the memo. "Please take special care not to allow unauthorized individuals to enter state buildings."

Employees also were asked to keep sensitive paperwork and documents with personally identifiable information in their offices locked up, among other measures.

Starting this weekend and running through at least Inauguration Day, armed protests are being planned at all 50 state capitals at the US Capitol, according to an internal FBI bulletin.

According to the bulletin, “armed protests are being planned at all 50 state capitols from 16 January through at least 20 January, and at the US Capitol from 17 January through 20 January."

The FBI says they also have identified a group that also planning to “storm” government offices in every state on Inauguration Day January 20, regardless of whether the states certified electoral votes for Biden or Trump.

The head of the Wisconsin Capitol Police told state lawmakers to stay away from the Capitol building this weekend.

He also suggested that they remove any personal information from social media accounts due to threats of unrest at capitols in all 50 states.
