Madison Council votes down Edgewood High School’s athletic field proposal

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Madison Common Council voted down Edgewood High School's proposal to use lights at its sports complex during a meeting Tuesday night.

The school proposed a deal to use the lights, but limit the number of night games and events where the lights would be turned on.

Council members voted 4 - 13 against the use of lights at the Edgewood Goodman Athletic Complex, something neighbors in the area have been concerned about since the idea came about in 2019.

The school responded to the vote in a late-night statement:

“This outcome is truly disappointing. I really feel bad for our students who are hurt the most by this outcome,” said Michael Elliott, President of Edgewood High School. “We worked hard with the neighborhood associations the past several months to reach a compromise. Like the other high schools with lights, we meet all the requirements and ordinances set forth by the City to add lights to our field. For some reason, the Common Council decided to treat Edgewood differently than other athletic facilities. This vote prevents Edgewood from fully using its facilities and is undeserving to our students, who like all students, simply want to play a limited number of home games on their home field under the lights.”
