Frigid temperatures bring the risk of hypothermia

MADISON (WKOW) -- Subzero temperatures and wind chills will be around for the rest of the week. When the temps reach below zero, everyone is at risk for hypothermia.

"Anyone who spends time outdoors could face cold-related illnesses and could faint face danger from the cold," Andrew Beckett, a spokesperson with Ready Wisconsin said.

Beckett said young children and the elderly are especially at risk since they may not recognize the signs of hypothermia immediately. When a person is experiencing hypothermia, their mental state may start to get foggy. Other signs include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, and slurred speech.

When temperatures are this low, Beckett recommends people spend as little time outdoors as possible. However, if someone does need to be outside, wearing multiple layers is encouraged.

"So making sure that you get out the big hat, the scarf, you know if you've got a ski mask or something that can properly cover everything."
