Authorities name man arrested for homicide tied to Wisconsin Dells death

UPDATE (WKOW) -- A Columbia County sheriff's official identified the man arrested in connection to a Wisconsin Dells death investigation.

The official said the man is Jeremy Mondy, 34, of Janesville.

According to law enforcement Mondy was taken to the Columbia County Jail on a tentative charge of first-degree intentional homicide in connection with the death investigation.

Mondy has not yet been formally charged with the crime according to online court records.

Mondy was detained after Lake Delton Police said he told officers responding to a welfare check call Sunday at The Vue Hotel on River Road that he was okay, but a woman was dead there. Authorities have not publicly identified the victim.

Earlier this month, Mondy was arrested for allegedly strangling a 41-year old Janesville woman. Janesville Police say that woman was reported missing by a family member Valentine's Day.

After Mondy was arrested, he was charged with two felony and four misdemeanor crimes. A criminal complaint states he arrived at the woman's home, drank alcohol, and after she said she was going to bed, he twisted her hoodie sweatshirt around her neck.

"She thought that he was going to kill her," the complaint states.

The complaint says Mondy also made a threat.

"I'll kill you, before I go back to jail," the complaint quotes Mondy as telling the woman. Court records say the woman was able to escape and get help from a friend.

Online court records state Mondy was released on a signature bond with supervision by Rock County's pre-trial services program, Justice Point. A court commissioner ordered him to have no contact with the woman.

Janesville Police say the woman was last seen by a family member Thursday or Friday.

I'm glad he's arrested," YWCA Rock County Alternatives to Violence Program Crisis Services Program Director Jenni Luepnitz says. But Luepnitz says the continuing lack of information on the whereabouts of the missing, Janesville woman is concerning. "This is (a) horrid and sad incident," she says.

Luepnitz says domestic abuse victims are vulnerable to contact from abusers.

"It could be finances," she says of why a contact would be broached despite potential, court orders barring it. "There might be children involved, there may need to be co-parenting, co-financial responsibilities," Luepnitz says.

"Let's not forget the good, old fashioned love," she says of a contact's motivation, with good memories obscuring past violence. "And then we go over resources. Case managers will do a needs assessment - what exactly is that victim needing to be able leave safely," Luepnitz says.

Luepnitz says The Alternatives To Violence Program operates a 24/7 crisis line at 608-752-2583. She says if someone is unable to place a call, they can text the crisis line at 608-371-9288.

Luepnitz says Family Services in Rock County also operates a crisis line for domestic violence, Defy Domestic Abuse, at 608-364-1083.
