UW Health reschedules vaccine appointments for second time

MADISON (WKOW) -- UW Health says it's rescheduling COVID-19 vaccine appointments for the second time.

Earlier this month, the health system had to postpone 2,400 vaccination appointments because it didn't have an adequate supply of doses. This week, UW Health says it is rescheduling another 4,000 appointments for the same reason. The vast majority of those are being rescheduled for the first time, but there are several patients whose appointments were postponed for the second time.

Dr. Matt Anderson with UW Health says they have the capacity to do about 6,400 vaccinations a week. This week, the health system got about 3,500 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. It anticipated about the same for next week, but found out it will only receive about 2,300.

The Department of Health Services distributes doses to health systems and pharmacies and agrees vaccine supply is the biggest issue for them right now.

Federal allocations for Wisconsin have gone up over recent weeks, but so have the number of vaccinators requesting doses.

UW Health says it's changing the way it schedules appointments to reduce the risk of having to reschedule again.

Dr. Anderson says they anticipate it will take through the end of March or beginning of April to vaccinate all of its 65+ patients.
