Firefighters put out restarted fire at Sauk County cabinet factory

UPDATE (WKOW) - An overnight fire has destroyed a Sauk County cabinet factory that's been a staple of a small community for a quarter century.

The fire started around 11 Saturday night at Schmucker Cabinetry near Reedsburg.

It's between Loganville and Hillpoint.

"It was pretty much a total loss by the time we got there," Ron Bindl, a firefighter with Loganville Area Fire Department, said.

For firefighters at Loganville Area Fire Department they were not expecting the level of destruction they saw early Sunday morning

"We've had barn fires and different things in the past but this was probably one of the bigger ones we've been involved with," Bindl said.

While Bindl and the rest of team at Loganville Fire Department were cleaning their equipment Sunday afternoon, crews from the Hillpoint Fire Department were called back on scene as the fire restarted.

The main concern Sunday afternoon was keeping the fire away from the building's generator.

With the fire driven away from the generator, fire crews' only option was to just let the rest of the wood smolder out.

Bindl said it's going to be a hit to the local community.

"It's going to hurt, they've done a lot for the area different kitchen setups so yeah it's going to be a tough fight for them for a while so hopefully they get back on track," he said.

According to the owner Melvin Schmucker, his home was right next to the factory but came out undamaged.

By the time Hillpoint firefighters put the fire out again, members of the local Amish community were already coming to the Schmuckers' aid.

Schmucker said he was happy no one was hurt and is hopeful that they'll be able to rebuild again soon.

Hill point fire chief Andrew Arneson says varnish rags likely started the initial fire.

The heat and amount of flammable material in the factory caused it to start back up again.
