MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison Police say one of their officers is expected to survive after being shot on State Street shortly after 12:30 Sunday morning.
A news release from the Wisconsin Department of Justice says police were attempting to apprehend a "wanted subject" in the 500 block of State Street when they ran. A round was fired during the arrest and an officer was hit, the release says.
The subject was taken into custody, and wasn't injured. The DOJ says they had a handgun.
The officer was taken to a local hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Another officer sustained minor injuries during the arrest.
This marks the first time in over 20 years that a Madison Police Officer was shot in the line of duty.
The Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident.
DCI will turn over investigative reports to the Dane County District Attorney when the investigation concludes.
