The system will start to impact northwestern parts of Wisconsin by the mid afternoon, with southwestern/central parts of Wisconsin impacted by rain starting between 3-5pm. Some of this rain will be heavy at times and we could even hear a few rumbles of thunder. Farther northwest, snow will start to move into areas close to the Mississippi. Winds will start to pick up in speed by the evening and remain breezy overnight. A thin layer of ice may develop too, especially places impacted by a mix.
Overnight, temperatures drop and steadily turn places that were once receiving rain to a mix then snow. Those who were impacted by a mix will watch that completely turn over to snow and those who had been impacted by snow will continue to be impacted by snow.
By Saturday morning, winds will be turning out of the northwest and continue to be breezy, with gusts upwards of 40 miles per hour at times. Snow will continue to fall through the late morning/early afternoon and be, at times, heavy. This is when most of southcentral/eastern parts of Wisconsin will see their accumulating snow.
In total, places farther northwest will see higher snow amounts which may be in excess of 6". Especially with the winds, drifts and isolated spots may accumulate upwards of 8". Farther southeast, the amounts quickly taper off with a very tight snow gradient (change in snow totals over a short distance) developing from Fond du Lac southwest into the Crawford County area. Southeast of Dane county may struggle to get more than an inch of snow.
