Beloit police shoot suspect during attack after traffic crash

BELOIT (WKOW) -- A suspect was shot by a Beloit police officer after trying to take the sergeant's gun, according to the Department of Justice.

At approximately 7:44 p.m. on December 15th, a Beloit Police Department sergeant was investigating a traffic accident near Prairie Avenue and Copeland Avenue, when a person allegedly attacked and attempted to take the sergeant's firearm. The sergeant discharged his firearm, hitting the person. The person was taken to a local hospital, their condition is unknown at this time.

No law enforcement personnel were injured during the incident. The involved officer from Beloit Police Department has been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.

The Department of Justice said there is no danger to the public. The Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation, with assistance form State Patrol and the State Crime Lab.
