Complaint filed against Madison Police Chief Barnes

MADISON (WKOW) - A complaint has been filed against Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes with the city's department of civil rights alleging Barnes made sexually inappropriate comments to one of his officers.

Department of Civil Rights Director Norman Davis confirmed a police officer recently filed the complaint against Barnes and an investigation is taking place.

Sources with knowledge of this situation told 27 News the complaint was filed by former Officer Mikaela Gardner. Gardner was employed by the department for eighteen months, leaving December 8. Gardner is a former UW Women's Hockey team player who was on the 2019 national championship team.

Sources told 27 News Gardner alleges Barnes made sexually inappropriate comments to Gardner during her exit interview and created an unprofessional environment.

"Chief Barnes was recently made aware of a complaint filed with the City of Madison’s Department of Civil Rights," Madison Police Spokesperson Stephanie Fryer said. "Chief Barnes and the entire Madison Police Department support the investigative process that will take place and always support a safe work environment for all employees. Additional statements about this complaint investigation will not occur until after it is complete and findings are made."

Gardner told 27 News she has no comment on the complaint.
