MADISON (WKOW) -- The Madison school board is considering an emergency COVID-19 leave policy for staff, as COVID-19 cases surge across the state.

The policy would provide staff members with five days of COVID-19 leave and two mental health days, on top of their already allocated paid time off.

Tim LeMonds, a spokesperson for MMSD, tells 27 News the policy would meet an immediate need, but more work would be done before a final proposal is in place.

"We are going to still continue to negotiate and collaborate with MTI to determine what that sick COVID sick leave is going to eventually look like. But tonight, we're voting on what we need right now," LeMonds said.

The board will hold a meeting Monday night to discuss and potentially vote on the temporary policy.
