Halderson trial suspended until at least January 18

MADISON (WKOW) — Judge John Hyland informed the 18 jurors in the Chandler Halderson trial that all proceedings will be suspended until at least January 18.

The postponement of the trial comes after the defendant, Chandler Halderson, tested positive for COVID-19. The news of Halderson's positive test came Tuesday evening after the jury had been sent home for the day. Halderson was tested on Monday as a part of an effort to test all inmates at the Dane County Jail.

Halderson is accused of killing and dismembering both of his parents, Bart and Krista Halderson, after he originally reported them missing in July.

Jurors were not told the positive test came from Halderson. Judge Hyland told the jurors an "essential person" to the trial tested positive. All attorneys and the defendant participated in the hearing via Zoom.

"We intend to continue our proceedings, as it's vitally important," Judge Hyland said.

The trial may be able to resume January 18 at the earliest, but the order to jurors from Judge Hyland states it could be later too, depending on how long Halderson has to be in quarantine.

Jurors will be notified on January 14 as to what day they are expected to return to court.
