Khari Sanford convicted in double homicide trial

UPDATE (WKOW) -- Khari Sanford was convicted Monday night in his double homicide trial.

Sanford is charged with two counts of first degree intentional homicide for the 2020 murders of Dr. Beth Potter and her husband Robin Carre in the UW Arboretum.

Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne and UW Police Chief Kristen Roman gave short responses to the verdict to 27 News shortly after it came down.

"I think the right verdict was rendered today," Roman said. "My thoughts, our thoughts go out to Robin and Beth's family and friends. Hopefully the verdict today brings a bit of closure. It's been a long and painful journey the last couple of years."

Ozanne says he believes justice was served.

"I believe it was a just verdict," Ozanne said. "I am very proud of this community in that we have people who are willing to give of their time, especially in the middle of pandemic."

The charges carry a mandatory life sentence, although it is possible that Sanford could be offered eligibility for parole at his future sentencing hearing.

The date for that hearing has not been set yet.
