Man dead following confrontation with police inside gas station

MADISON (WKOW) — One man is dead after a confrontation with police inside a Kwik Trip in the 3500 block of East Washington Avenue.

The Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) says Madison Police Department officers were trying to arrest a wanted suspect when that person brought out a weapon. DCI says an officer tried to use a taser, but that didn't work. Another officer fired their weapon in the direction of the suspect, DCI says.

DCI says the suspect then barricaded themself in a bathroom and officers heard gunfire. The suspect was later found dead.

Assistant Police Chief Matt Tye confirmed to 27 News police were in the area searching for the man they had named as a suspect in a homicide earlier in the week, Justin Kopmeyer, 38. Madison police said he should be considered armed and dangerous.

Assistant Chief Tye also gave condolences to the homicide victim's family. When asked if the man found dead in the Kwik Trip bathroom was the homicide suspect, Tye said they were waiting on a positive identification, but reiterated officers were in the area searching for that same suspect.

Tye said there were people inside the convenience store when this happened, but no one else was hurt. DCI says no law enforcement personnel were hurt.

A section of East Washington Avenue was shut down for hours while police investigated the incident.

Both officers involved have been placed on administrative assignment pending the results of the investigation by DCI.

Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes is expected to provide an update on Monday.
