Mistrial declared in sexual assault case against former soccer coach

UPDATE (WKOW) -- After hours of deliberation, a mistrial has been declared in the case of a former youth soccer coach charged with sexual assault.

27 News was the only news station in the courtroom when Judge Nicholas McNamara made the announcement just before midnight. The jury couldn't agree on a decision.

Daniel Gildea is accused of inappropriately touching one of his former players more than a decade ago. He took the stand in his own defense on Thursday.

Jurors indicated they were deadlocked on a decision. And when it was clear this wouldn't be resolved, Judge McNamara spoke to the courtroom.

"So on this record, I will conclude this trial with an order finding that it is a mistrial," he said.

Judge McNamara thanked the jury for their time.

"Jurors, we hear you, we understand what you're communicating. And we accept it. And so your service in this case is now completed."

Gildea's bond conditions continue. But the case is essentially in limbo while the council decides what they want to do next.
