MADISON (WKOW) — The husband of a woman killed on Madison's west side on Monday is now charged in her death.
The Madison Police Department told 27 News that Jose Duenas-Quinonez is now considered a suspect in the death of 43-year-old Micaela Juarez Ocolt. The agency previously identified him as a person of interest.
Ocolt was found dead Monday at a shopping plaza on South Midvale Boulevard north of the Beltline. The cause and manner of her death has not yet been released by the Dane County Medical Examiner's Office.
Online court records show Duenas-Quinonez has been charged with a single count of first-degree intentional homicide. There's also a warrant out for his arrest.
A criminal complaint filed in Dane County states Ocolt died Saturday night. The complaint states an autopsy determined she was stabbed four times and died because of a fatal stab to her neck. The manner of her death was ruled a homicide.
The complaint states Ocolt was found by a family member, who came to check on her at the store after not hearing from her for two days. This family member contacted police and informed them that the couple’s six-year-old daughter was also unaccounted for.
Surveillance cameras and witnessesses filled in a timeline for police. The charging document states Ocolt and the Duenas-Quinonez left and returned from Spark Nutrition several times Saturday evening. Ocolt’s last known contact with someone other than her husband was a phone conversation around 11 p.m.
Duenas-Quinonez is then seen on video leaving Spark Nutrition in Ocolt’s car around 11:17 p.m. The complaint states a car similar to Ocolt’s is then seen behind the Hyland Gates Shopping Center, and someone approaches the dumpsters.
Duenas-Quinonez then drives to Woodmans, and once he leaves the store he gets into another car and returns to Spark Nutrition, where he picks up his own car.
MPD officials previously stated they believed Duenas-Quinonez had left the country with their young daughter. The complaint alleges that he and the girl boarded a flight to Cancun, Mexico around 6:05 a.m. Sunday.
The complaint alleges there was tension between the couple on the night Micaela died, and in the month prior. The family member who found Ocolt told authorities Duenas-Quinonez was “demonstrating increased jealousy and controlling behavior” toward her. The complaint alleges she may have recently began a relationship with another man.
