MPD believes drive by shooting outside of house party was "targeted"

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes made his first statement since a drive-by shooting that hurt three teenagers.

The shooting happened Friday night on Meinders Road.

"This is not the first time in my career I've seen teen parties turn violent," Chief Barnes said.

Barnes says this is the second time in a few months the address on the 5000 block of Meinders Road was shot at.

"We certainly believe that it was targeted," Barnes said. "Our information indicates that there was a prior shooting into this dwelling when no one was home, it was only property damage."

Friday, three teens were injured. Chief Barnes says it's a blessing all three are okay.

"It appears that there may even have been an exchange of gunfire between someone that was at the party and people who may have driven by," Barnes said. "This is why we need people to come forward."

Barnes says with the number of people that were at the party, he believes at least one attendee knows why the shooting happened and that's why police are hoping for cooperation.

Barnes says because most attendees at the party are underage, police can't ask them questions about Friday night without a parent's permission.

"If you know your child was there, talk...to your child," Barnes said. "That information in this case could potentially stop the next incident or it could stop the next person from getting hurt."

Barnes says he hopes neighbors in the area of the 5000 block of Meinders Road will call crime stoppers with any information they have, or work with police on getting any digital evidence from late Friday night. That includes video doorbell footage or surveillance cameras.
