Dog rescued after falling into septic tank at Columbus home

COLUMBUS, Wis. (WKOW) -- A dog was rescued after falling into a septic tank in Columbus late Thursday night, according to the Columbus Fire Department.

Deputy Chief Jerrod Fox said in a news release, at about 9 p.m. the fire department responded to a property on North Lewis Street for a report of a dog that had fallen 15 feet into a septic tank.

Deputy Chief Fox said the tank was behind a home, beneath a deck. It had just been emptied that day.

With the help of ropes and harnesses, rescuers got to work, entering the confined space to save the dog.

"When the firefighter [reached] the bottom he was able to harness the very cooperative dog for rescue. I am soo proud of this department," said Deputy Chief Fox.

It took about three hours, but when the dog was finally rescued it was reportedly alert and appeared to be unhurt.
