MADISON (WKOW) -- A tactical team was called to a Madison apartment complex Thursday after a man ran into it to escape pursuing law enforcement.
Monona Police Department Chief Brian Chany said a patrolling officer saw a vehicle going "well over" the speed limit on Milwaukee Street around 10:30 a.m.
The driver -- identified as Donovan Moore, 22, of DeForest -- was known to the officer. Chaney said Moore has a history of illegally having a firearm during prior arrests.
The officer tried to stop Moore, but he took off.
The pursuit left Madison on US 151, eventually entering Sun Prairie before it led back to Milwaukee Street. During the chase, law enforcement used tire deflation devices to cripple Moore's vehicle.
Moore eventually jumped out of the still-moving vehicle and ran into the Meadowlands Apartment complex, helped by someone who held the door for him. He then slammed the door behind him, preventing officers from getting inside.
The Meadowlands Apartments were declared a chronic nuisance in March 2023.
Law enforcement eventually got in the building, established a perimeter and learned what room Moore was in. However, the room's occupants wouldn't answer the door.
Chaney said because Moore had been armed in the past, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Response Team was called in to execute a search warrant.
Moore was then arrested in the apartment.
Two other people were inside, and suspected illegal drugs were found inside. No firearm was found in the search, according to Chaney.
Moore was arrested for attempted eluding, first-degree recklessly endangering safety, resisting and a probation hold. The Dane County Sheriff Office, which helped in the incident, issued several traffic citations.
Chaney said Moore has a "lengthy" criminal history that includes violent crimes.
Many residents were concerned by the large police presence outside the complex but "expressed appreciation" to law enforcement, according to Chaney.
