MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison police are investigating after someone was hit in the head with a rock after attending a vigil.
Madison Police Department Lt. Edward Marshall said a group was heading home from a candlelight vigil near Library Mall Tuesday around 7:15 p.m. One of the members reported they were hit by an object they believed was a rock.
The group also reported they heard someone making "profane and racially insensitive comments" toward the group. The group believes the incident was racially motivated, according to Marshall.
UW-Madison officials confirmed UW students were in the group that was harassed. Officials said the vigil was to support Israel.
"That our students had to confront such hateful acts is absolutely unacceptable," Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin said in a post on UW-Madison's news site. "Antisemitism has no place in our community. We will not tolerate violence of any kind, and we appreciate that the Madison Police Department is responding to this incident with appropriate seriousness."
MPD is actively investigating the incident, and anyone with information can contact the police department or Madison Area Crime Stoppers. A tip can also be submitted through p3tips.com.
Anyone who wants to report a racially or ethnically motivated incident (potential hate crimes) should call MPD immediately, or 911 if appropriate. While the MPD self-report system is available, direct communication with an on-duty Officer most often provides us with the best possible initial information.
