Armed robbery suspect dies after shooting himself

MONROE, Wis. (WKOW) -- Authorities say the suspect in an armed robbery in Rock County is dead following a short chase in Green County.

Green County Sheriff Jeff Skatrud says officers were warned around 2:10 p..m. Tuesday to look out for a vehicle that was suspected in an armed robbery in Orfordville.

About 30 minutes later, police in Monroe saw the vehicle. Skatrud says the officers tried to stop the vehicle, but it took off. Police followed it to a business parking lot along 17th Street and 12th Avenue.

When the vehicle stopped in the parking lot, Sheriff Skatrud says the driver got out, pointed a gun at officers, then shot himself.

The sheriff says no officers fired their weapons and no officers were hurt.

Skatrud says the Monroe Police Department requested that the Green County Sheriff's Office conduct the death investigation.
