ILLINOIS (WKOW) -- A bull elk seen wandering Wisconsin looking for love met a tragic end in Illinois Tuesday night.
Bull elk 357 was hit by a semi on Interstate 55 at Interstate 80, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources elk specialist Christina Kizewski told 27 News. This is south Shorewood and around 40 miles from downtown Chicago.
The 3-year-old bull zig-zagged across Wisconsin on his trip from Black River Falls to the Shorewood area.
As a crow flies, the trip would be over 280 miles, but 357 added on plenty of detours to stop in Auburndale, Wisconsin Rapids and McFarland.
Kizewski said the elk likely left his herd because he was a less dominant bull and was traveling to find other breeding opportunities.
