17-year-old shot in Monona, police looking for vehicle of interest

MONONA, Wis. (WKOW) -- Police say a 17-year-old who was shot in the parking lot of a business along Monona Drive is expected to survive.

Monona Police Chief Brian Chaney said officers were called around 6 p.m. Wednesday to a business in the 6300 block of Monona Drive for a report that someone had been shot. A Dane County dispatch official identified the business as O'Connell's Lakeside Liquor.

Soon after the shooting report came in, Chaney said officers received a report of a car crash in an adjacent lot.

Chaney said the 17-year-old had been shot in an "upper extremity." The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The chief said the crash happened as the victim and another "uninvolved motorist" tried to drive off. One person in the other car was hurt.

"We are extremely fortunate that tonight’s incident did not result in the loss of life," Chaney said in a news release. "There is no excuse for gun violence in our community. Absolutely none! I am just as frustrated with many residents in our area about this type of dangerous nonsense. We must do better."

Police are now looking for a stolen car they're calling a "vehicle of interest." It's a black, 2022 Tesla Model 3 with California registration 9BAM452.

Anyone with information about this case should call Monona Police at (608) 222-0463 or Madison Area Crime Stoppers at (608) 266-6014.
