3 people die in crash after Dane Co. officers attempt traffic stop

MONONA, Wis. (WKOW) -- A failed traffic stop turned deadly for three people on New Year's Day, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ).

In a news release from the DOJ, at about 9 p.m. Monday, Monona police officers tried to pull over a suspicious vehicle at Nichols Road and Monona Drive. The driver sped away.

As officers tried to stop the vehicle, a Dane County deputy deployed a tire deflation device and the car crashed near Femrite Drive and Buckeye Road near Cottage Grove, according to officials.

The news release said the three people inside the car died on the scene.

None of the officers involved were hurt, but they were placed on administrative duty, which is agency policy.

The Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is now investigating the "officer-involved critical incident." Wisconsin State Patrol, as well as several DCI specialists, are also helping.

Monona Police Chief Brian Chaney put out a statement about the crash early Tuesday morning.

"MOPD is comprised of caring and compassionate law enforcement professionals. As Chief, I am committed to supporting the community, our impacted staff and the families of those involved in this incident. We are also committed to respecting the process and I have full confidence in the WI Department of Justice," he said in an email.

Investigative reports will be turned over to the Dane County District Attorney. No further information is expected to be released at this time.
