MONONA, Wis. (WKOW) -- The Monona Police Department is temporarily changing its focus on pursuits after a recent deadly crash following a police chase.
A news release from the Wisconsin Department of Justice said at about 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 1, Monona police officers tried to pull over a suspicious vehicle at Nichols Road and Monona Drive. The driver sped away.
A tire deflation device was used and the car crashed near Femrite Drive and Buckeye Road near Cottage Grove, according to officials. The three people in the car died.
Monona Police Chief Brian Chaney said the people who died were two 30-year-olds and a 19-year-old. No further information about the victims was released.
Because of the deadly crash, the department is making temporary changes.
"The City of Monona PD, supported by Mayor O'Connor, has decided to temporarily focus our priorities on suspects who we believe to be involved in dangerous and violent felony offenses," said Chief Chaney.
The chief said this policy will be in place while the Monona Community and its officials have the opportunity to voice their opinions on what's best for the city.
He added that the department is cooperating fully with the investigation of the incident.
