BELMONT, Wis. (WKOW) -- Two people accused of killing a baby appeared in Lafayette County court Wednesday, according to the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff Reg Gill said the sheriff's office was told of a potential child abuse case involving an infant on Dec. 23, 2023, that happened in Belmont. The sheriff's office began an investigation, aided by the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation.
On Dec. 27, the sheriff's office was told the baby died at UW Children's Hospital in Madison.
The baby's parents were then taken into custody.
Court records show Maria Guadulupe Atlahua-Aguas, 23, and Azariel Aguilar-Gonzalez, 24 -- both of Belmont -- are charged with first-degree reckless homicide and physical abuse of a child, repeated acts causing great bodily harm, both as a party to a crime.
They were given a cash bond of $1 million.
Both remain in custody during this ongoing investigation.
They are set to appear in court again on Jan. 17 for preliminary hearings.
