SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (WKOW) -- One of the boys who fell through the ice of a Sun Prairie retention pond Friday has died, according to the Sun Prairie Police Department and Sun Prairie Fire Department.
The children fell through the ice at a retention pond near South Thompson Road.
The children have been identified as a 6-year-old boy and an 8-year-old boy.
The boys were removed from the water by first responders and were taken to an area hospital in critical condition.
A dive team from the Madison Fire Department and a boat team from the Dane County Sheriff’s Office were requested following reports of additional child potentially being in the area when the two boys fell in.
It was determined only two children went into the pond, but the dive team still performed a search as a precaution.
Officials say they learned over the weekend that one of the boys died. The other remains in critical condition.
Officials say they extend their "deepest condolences, wishes and prayers for the family during this terribly tragic time."
