Firefighters tackle fire at Beloit business in 'lengthy operation'

BELOIT, Wis. (WKOW) -- Firefighters are working to put out a large fire at a Beloit business early Friday morning.

According to an email from a city spokesperson, this is happening in the area of Yates and Copeland Avenues. The call initially came in at 12:45 a.m. and by 4 a.m. it was still burning.

"This will be a lengthy operation due to the significant number of tires being stored at the location and the current weather conditions," said Sarah Lock, director of strategic communications.

Some homes in the immediate area are being evacuated because of smoke conditions. The evacuation area is south of Copeland Avenue between Yates and Portland Avenues to Harvey Street.

Lock said a temporary warming location has been set up at Merrill Elementary School: 1635 Nelson Ave.

No injuries have been reported. But the Rock County Public Health Department is recommending that people wear masks when they are in the area impacted by the fire.
