Snowmobile trails open in Dane County

MADISON (WKOW) -- Dane County's snowmobile trails opened Friday afternoon, according to Dane County Parks.

With up to a foot of snow falling in the county, the 500 miles of sled trails will be ready to ride. The trails include Badger, Glacial Drumlin and the Military Ridge State Trails.

To ride the trails, six inches of snow must be accumulated and riders must have a State Snowmobile Trail Pass. When hitting the trails, riders should keep an eye out for those grooming the trails.

The majority of snowmobile trails pass through private land, so riders should take care to stay on the designated trail. They should also ride safely and sober. DNR official said over the past five years, alcohol was involved in 68% of snowmobile fatalities.

To receive up-to-date information on trail openings and closing, visit the Dane County Council of Snowmobile Clubs’ websiteFacebook page, or call the Snowmobile Trails Hotline at (608) 242-4576. For up-to-date information on Dane County Parks trail closures and conditions, visit the Dane County Parks Closures & Trail Conditions webpage
