MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison's mayor said the city is doing its best to address the city's roads that are still covered in packed snow and ice.
Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway said after dual snowstorms and a sudden drop in temperature, salt isn't enough to melt what's left on the roads, as it's efficacy is reduced below 20 degrees. In the meantime, the city is using sand on the roads to offer extra traction.
People have expressed their frustration to the city, to which the mayor said the weather presented "unprecedented" challenges.
"We received nearly 20 inches of snow in four days, followed by a week of frigid temperatures," Rhodes-Conway said.
The city stated severe weather and heavy traffic made it hard to ensure the 778 miles of roads on the salt network were clear before temperatures dropped.
Crews are applying sand to hills, curves and intersections "around the clock" according to the mayor. She said once the weather warms up, salt will become an option.
Anyone who encounters slippery roads can report them to the city.
