MADISON (WKOW) -- Assembly Republicans introduced a bill that would ask voters to consider a ban on abortion in Wisconsin if the fetus is at least 14 weeks old.
The bill (AB 975) was directly introduced and is up for a public hearing Monday during the Committee on Health, Aging, and Long-Term Care's meeting.
It includes an exception if the mother's life or health is in danger.
Current Wisconsin law restricts abortions at 20 weeks, except in medical emergencies.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos told 27 News in December 2023 that one of his priorities for the coming year was introducing an abortion referendum.
Gov. Tony Evers has already said he won't sign the bill if it clears the Legislature. Evers previously said he'd veto any bill that "makes reproductive health care any less accessible for Wisconsinites than it is right now.”
Sen. Melissa Agard denounced the bill in a statement.
"Stop the out of touch attacks on abortions in our state, and stop acting as though being a legislator means being a doctor," she said. "This is not the way our government should work -- fast tracking bills through direct submission on a Friday to be heard on a Monday."
The bill is scheduled to be heard the same day Vice President Kamala Harris plans to launch the March for Life national reproductive rights tour. The first event will happen in Waukesha County.
