Woman sentenced to jail following string of cemetery thefts

GREEN COUNTY, Wis. (WKOW) -- A Green County woman will spend 60 days in jail for her involvement in a string of cemetery thefts.

Carrie Thompson of Monroe was charged with 40 counts of receiving or concealing stolen property.

The charges stem from an investigation by the Monroe Police Department where authorities learned dozens of items were being stolen from cemeteries in both Green and Rock County.

Monroe police detectives told 27 News they traced the missing items back to Thompson when they learned she was trying to sell the items online.

Thompson was arrested and charged a short time later.

According to court records, officials were able to recover more than 100 items from Thompson's home, vehicle and an abandoned garage with which she was associated.

She pleaded no contest to five of the 40 counts of receiving or concealing stolen property and was found guilty on those charges. The remaining 35 counts were dismissed.

Several of the victims attended her sentencing hearing Monday and read victim impact statements.
