Partial mistrial declared in Madison homicide trial

MADISON (WKOW) -- A verdict was reached Friday in the trial for a man charged in a fatal shooting at the Harmony apartment complex.

A jury found Devonte Gafford, 32, guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm. A mistrial was declared on the other two counts -- first-degree intentional homicide and first-degree recklessly endangering safety.

Gafford was accused in the shooting death of 20-year-old Devon Grant. Prosecutors allege this crime happened following a robbery and drug deal that went badly during the transaction.

According to court records, prosecutors say Gafford orchestrated a homicide on Milwaukee Street and Milky Way in July. They argue that Gafford targeted the victim, alleging he stole approximately $20,000 worth of drugs from Gafford earlier that day.

During the trial, prosecutors maintained that Gafford and an accomplice conducted a drive-by shooting that resulted in Grant's death. Gafford, however, contended he acted in self-defense, claiming the victim and their friends fired shots at him first, and he was attempting to defuse the situation.

Over the past few days, prosecutors presented their case, seeking to sway the jury toward a guilty verdict. Despite their efforts, the jury remained deadlocked Thursday night after several hours of deliberation. At one point, the judge had the jury switch rooms hoping a change in scenery might help move discussions along.
