Man injured in shooting at Madison park during Sunday night gathering

MADISON, Wis. (WKOW) -- A man was hurt after a shooting at a Madison park during a gathering Sunday night, according to the Madison Police Department.

Sgt. Joseph Weberpal said at about 9:26 p.m. reports of a shooting in the area of Reindahl Park started coming in.

Officers responded to the location on Portage Road and found a man who had been struck by gunfire. He was taken to an area hospital where police said he continued to receive medical treatment for his "critical injuries."

While some officers were helping the man who had been shot, others located and detained two people of interest who are believed to have been involved in the incident. One of them was released while the other was booked into the jail on a pending attempted homicide charge.

Sgt. Weberpal said a "gathering" was happening at the time of the incident. And they don't think the shooting was random.

The Violent Crimes United is assisting MPD in the investigation.
