Wisconsin AG Josh Kaul files charges related to fake electors scheme

MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul filed charges against three individuals in connection to a fake electors scheme in 2020.

Kaul announced the charges Tuesday at noon:

"At the Wisconsin Department of Justice, we are committed to protecting the integrity of our electoral process. This morning we filed a criminal complaint in Dane County Circuit Court charging three defendants in connection with an alleged conspiracy to have electors who are not duly appointed presidential electors, meet and cast votes in Wisconsin in December 2020; and transmit a so-called certificate of the votes of the 2020 electors from Wisconsin that in part referred to these electors as the duly elected and qualified electors for President and Vice President of the United States of America from the state of Wisconsin, and reflected the votes of these on appointed electors for president and vice president."

Two attorneys, Kenneth Chesebro and Michael Jim Troupis, and aide to former President Donald Trump were charged with a Class H Felony of Uttering as Genuine a forged writing or object, or what the criminal complaint called “Certificate of the Votes of the 2020 Electors from Wisconsin.”

Upon hearing of the charges, Gov. Tony Evers took to Twitter to share his thoughts. He posted "good".

Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson called the charges "outrageous."

The senator tweeted, "Now Democrats are weaponizing Wisconsin’s judiciary. Apparently conservative lawyers advising clients is illegal under Democrat tyranny. Democrats are turning America into a banana republic."

Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler issued the following statement:

“Respecting the results of free and fair elections is core to American democracy, a bedrock value that Trump and his associates have proven willing to violate at every turn. The charges brought by Attorney General Josh Kaul today represent an important step in holding accountable those who aided and abetted Trump’s attack on our democracy in Wisconsin after voters rejected Trump in 2020. We look forward to delivering further accountability to convicted felon Donald Trump and his MAGA underlings at the ballot box this November.”

Wisconsin joins states including Nevada, Georgia, Arizona, and Michigan that have also criminally charged fake electors.
