Cops continue search for suspect in fatal shooting on Willy St

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison Police recovered more than 40 shell casings following a shooting near the intersection of Williamson and Baldwin streets early Friday morning that left one man dead.

Police were walking up and down the 1300 block of Williamson Street well into the afternoon Friday trying to speak with business owners or anyone who could have seen or heard anything leading up to the shooting.

Spokesperson for the Madison Police, Stephanie Fryer, says the incident started at the Crystal Corner Bar. Fryer says it's still early in the investigation, so they don't have all the details. Officials said they know there was a fight at the bar and that it continued outside before someone fired shots dozens of times eventually killing one man.

Fryer says the shooting happened quickly, but it was a very chaotic scene that left damage to multiple buildings along Williamson.

If you've ever been on Williamson Street at night, it's common to see people walking their dogs or walking home from a bar. Fryer says the situation could have had even worse consequences.

"Bullets were flying and anyone in that area could have been injured," Fryer said. "We're just thankful at this time that no additional victims were found while still feeling for the family of the victim involved."

Neighbor Alena Dunn says she, her husband and their three kids were all asleep when they started hearing gun shots.

"We heard the gunshots. [It sounded] like a lot of rounds going off and then I heard some arguing, maybe about a minute of arguing. Then, after that, we heard a lot more gunshots happening."

Dunn says she heard more yelling after that and ran to her kids' room to make sure they were okay. She says, thankfully, they all slept through it, but it was a really frightening morning.

Dunn says her family has only been here for two years after moving from New York and they've been surprised by the amount of crime that happens near their home.

If you heard or saw anything, or have cellphone or security pictures and videos, please reach out to Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014. You can give them any information you have while remaining completely anonymous.
