MADISON (WKOW) -- Twelve people were hurt after gunfire erupted at a Madison apartment building early Sunday morning, according to Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes.
Barnes provided an update on the shooting during a press conference Monday morning. It was originally reported that at least 10 people were hurt. Barnes said it's now known that 12 people were hurt, including one injured by broken glass and another who suffered a shoulder injury while trying to escape from the violent situation.
Barnes said the shooting happened when more than 25 people were partying on the roof of the Lux Apartments on Johnson Street in downtown Madison.
According to Barnes, the party was unauthorized and many of the partygoers were high school aged.
"I am particularly disturbed by the number of young people involved in these incidents," said Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway, speaking on the gun violence over the weekend.
"Guns are not a solution to conflict and we must stop normalizing their use and accessibility," the mayor added. "The families impacted by these events will never be the same."
Rhodes-Conway called on state legislators to address gun laws.
"It should not be easier to buy a gun than cast a ballot," the mayor said.
She added, "Our state lawmakers need to put aside partisan politics and enact commonsense gun safety measures that are supported by an overwhelming number of Wisconsinites. The Legislature’s decade of inaction is irresponsible and ignores pleas from communities around the state to keep our residents safe. The state legislature's refusal to prioritize gun violence prevention makes it very challenging for Wisconsin Mayors to protect our cities. We need them to help us keep our communities safe."
Multiple detectives are reviewing digital evidence in the case.
At least one victim remains in the hospital. Their condition is unknown at this time.
In a news conference Sunday, Barnes addressed the public.
"It is truly a miracle that no one is dead, a miracle," said Barnes.
He went on to explain what transpired when officers were initially called to The Lux apartments on West Johnson Street at about 12:45 a.m.
"Officers watched as dozens of people rush out of the building, running in panic and tripping over one another simply to find safety. One teen who suffered multiple gunshot wounds was found bleeding in the street," the chief explained.
He said officers ran up 12 flights of stairs to reach the rooftop. They found people in various stages of distress and some were hiding in a maintenance closet to stay safe.
Barnes said nine people suffered gunshot wounds or a graze. One other person was hurt by broken glass in the area. Some victims contacted the police overnight to report injuries. Others arrived at local hospitals to get medical attention.
The victims range in age from 14 to 23 years old.
"These students should have been celebrating summer vacation and not receiving medical treatment," he said.
At this time none of the injuries received are considered life threatening.
The Violent Crime Unit is leading the investigation.
The suspect(s) in this case has not been apprehended. Barnes said there were two different kinds of shell casings found at the scene, so they could be looking at one shooter with two weapons or multiple gunmen.
When 27 News' Kodichi Lawrence asked about the public's safety, this is how the chief responded:
"Whenever there's someone who's fired a gun the script indiscriminately like this, there's always a threat to the community. But we're going to work to ensure that whoever is responsible for this is brought to justice."
Investigators are looking through surveillance video from the building and asking witnesses to share cell phone video of the incident if they have it.
"If you have something, even if it doesn't show the event, we want people to turn that over to us so we can see if we can match up who is responsible for this and bring them to justice," he said.
