MADISON (WKOW) -- Two police officers who defended the U.S. Capitol from rioters during the insurrection on January 6, 2021, were in Madison on Thursday, campaigning for President Joe Biden's reelection.
Officers Harry Dunn and Daniel Hodges said they think former President Donald Trump is a threat to democracy.
"His failure to denounce the violence on January 6 is a slap in the face to every officer who put their life on the line that day, including myself and Harry," Hodges said. "My fellow officers and I experienced that type of violence at the hands of a mob of MAGA extremists on January 6, all because they bought into Donald Trump's lie that the 2020 election was stolen."
Hodges said he was worried he would be permanently injured because of the beating he took on January 6.
"Whether someone was trying to gouge out my eye or crushing me in a doorway, stealing my baton and beating me in my head, it was a harrowing day for everyone involved," he said. "But I knew that we had to stand tall and protect the Capitol in order for the transfer of power to happen, and we were successful. We won the day. But the threat continues."
Hodges said he doesn't think former President Trump can say he's pro-law enforcement because he has promised to pardon some of the people who have been convicted for their actions on January 6.
"As a law enforcement officer, I believe he has no place anywhere near the Oval Office," Hodges said. "I am deeply concerned that if we do not stop him, history could repeat itself."
27 News reached out to the Republican Party of Wisconsin for a response to the officers campaigning on behalf of President Biden, but we have not heard back.
