Overnight police chase ends at downtown Madison construction site

MADISON, Wis. (WKOW) -- A police chase ended when a suspect vehicle drove through a downtown Madison construction site, entangling in construction fencing and crashing overnight.

Lt. Caleb Johnson said it all started just after midnight Thursday. The Madison Police Department responded to a request for help by another agency that was in pursuit of a car near Packers Avenue and Commercial Avenue.

An attempt to put out tire deflation devices didn't work. And the car kept driving toward downtown.

MPD officers joined the pursuit near State Street and West Johnson Street, where Lt. Johnson said the driver was going against traffic and presenting a serious safety hazard.

Eventually, the driver went through a construction area on West Johnson Street, hitting barricades and plowing through scaffolding. A front wheel came off the car, but the driver kept going.

Officials said the car was dragging construction fencing on its hood for several hundred feet before crashing and becoming disabled. The driver got out and tried to run away, but was apprehended by officers.

MPD said the driver is under arrest but was taken to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries from crashing the car.

Lt. Johnson said criminal charges are pending and illegal drug use is suspected to be a factor in the incident.
