MADISON (WKOW) -- A Sun Prairie teenager was arrested Monday and formally charged Wednesday in connection to a mass shooting at The Lux apartments on June 9, according to online jail and court records.
Court documents show Will L. Williams Jr., 17, of Sun Prairie is charged with 1st-degree recklessly endangering safety using a dangerous weapon and two counts of felony bail jumping.
According to a criminal complaint, one of the people who was shot told police the shots came from behind her, and she recognized Williams Jr. was one of the people standing in that area.
Williams Jr. originally told police during an interview that he was not at The Lux the night of the shooting. However, police then reviewed a screenshot that showed him at the building that night. Detectives said the tattoos on the hands and throat matched the ones Williams Jr. had.
Williams Jr. said he threw the gun away after the shooting but police say he changed his story several times as to where he got rid of it.
The criminal complaint said one unfired round of ammunition found on the rooftop at The Lux matched the kind of gun Williams Jr. said he had.
During an initial appearance Wednesday, a court commissioner set bond for Williams Jr. at $40,000 cash. If he pays that bond, Williams Jr. is still not to be at The Lux as a condition of his bond, court records stated.
Even though Williams was arrested Monday, Madison police did not announce his arrest until a news conference Friday. Chief Shon Barnes also did not release his name at the news conference, nor acknowledge that charges had already been filed Wednesday. 27 News has followed up with the Madison Police Department about the delay in getting information out to the public.
Chief Barnes did say they are looking for additional shooters in connection with the incident June 9.
Williams Jr. is scheduled to be in court again on July 9 for a preliminary hearing, according to online court records.
