JANESVILLE (WKOW) -- One firefighter was injured while responding to an apartment fire in Janesville on Monday, Janesville Fire Chief Ryan Murphy said.
Murphy said the firefighter was transported to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries after Surrey Ridge Apartments on East Racine Street caught fire. Nearly 60 firefighters responded to the scene for the firefight that took several hours to extinguish.
The fire was reported around 1:45 p.m. on Monday at the multi-family apartment building where 23 of 26 units are occupied. JFD arrived and saw fire and smoke coming from the attic space. Fire crews attacked the attic fire and began searching the building ensuring that all occupants of the 23 units had evacuated.
The report said that the fire quickly went across the roof structure which required the removal of firefighters from inside the building. No civilians were injured.
Murphy said the estimated property damage is around $1.5 million, leaving extensive damage to the building. The property owners and the American Red Cross were on site to aid displaced residents. The estimated cost of content damage is $389,085, and property remediation efforts are underway.
Alliant Energy, Janesville Police Department, SWEPT, and Janesville Transit also supported JFD.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
