(Amherst, WI) -- Authorities in Portage County say an armed man involved in a 24-hour standoff with police has been found dead. The Portage County Sheriff's Office says 32-year-old Jeffrey E. Miller was found dead at a residence in Amherst Friday night after refusing to surrender. Authorities tried to arrest Miller on Thursday in connection with an attempted homicide. Instead he began shooting at police, and fled inside a house at 450 Mill Avenue, refusing to come out. The sheriff's office says authorities did not return fire. The cause of Miller's death has not been disclosed.
On Tuesday night, Miller was involved in a high speed chase with police that came to an end when he crashed his vehicle in Baraboo. The Sauk County Sheriff's Office says Miller shot at deputies, hitting one of them in the arm, before he ran into a wooded area. That area was extensively searched and cleared the following day.
