Teen pleads guilty in death of Reedsburg 7th grader

SAUK COUNTY, Wis. (WKOW) -- A teenager accused of hitting and killing a seventh-grade student in Reedsburg pleaded guilty in court Wednesday morning.

Kevin Green, 19, of Platteville was charged with homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle in Evelyn Gurney's death.

criminal complaint said Gurney was waiting for the bus in May 2023 when Green was driving on WIS 33. He swerved toward a ditch, hit the back of the school bus, and then hit her while she was standing in her driveway.

Green told a deputy he was not on his phone at the time of the crash. However, the criminal complaint stated phone data shows he was texting while driving before and during the crash.

A judge withheld Green's sentencing as long as he successfully completes four years of probation. That probation includes the following terms:

  • 200 hours of community service with a minimum of 50 hours for each year of probation
  • 3 months in the Sauk County Jail with work privileges to begin on or before August 2
  • 8 community presentations to high school aged children about the dangers of distracted driving, with a minimum of two presentations per year
  • No driving without a valid license
  • DNA sample on file
  • Court fees, fines paid
  • No contact with the Gurney family unless authorized by the Gurneys and agent

Court records show his driver's license was also revoked for a year.

The judge said the Gurney family agreed to the guilty plea and sentencing agreement.
