Pontiac recovered from Wisconsin River after being submerged over 30 years

RICHLAND COUNTY, Wis. (WKOW) -- Investigators believe a red Pontiac Grand Prix that was pulled from the Wisconsin River on Wednesday was submerged over 30 years.

The Sauk County Sheriff’s Drive Team, with help from Wegner’s Auto Service, successfully retrieved the car from the Wisconsin River near the Lone Rock bridge. That area straddles the Sauk/Richland/Iowa County lines, according to the Richland County Sheriff's Office.

The Pontiac is a late 1980s model. Authorities said they have identified and located the owner of the car. It was determined the car was stolen in Monroe County in 1990.

The investigation will continue to determine how the vehicle ended up in the river, the sheriff's office said. No suspicious items were found within the vehicle and there's no evidence to believe any occupants were hurt.

Photos show the badly corroded condition of the car, with the front bumper hanging off on one side. The roof of the car is also caved in.
