FITCHBURG, Wis. (WKOW) -- An armed man who was shot by Fitchburg police is in critical condition, police said Monday evening.
Around 8 a.m., police responded to Whispering Pines Way for a 911 call regarding a couple that was fighting. A witness reported a physical altercation between the two individuals. The witness directed the officers to the residence where the two people were.
Officers entered the home after confirming there was an ongoing altercation between the two who are believed to be in a domestic relationship.
One of the people, a 28-year-old man from Fitchburg, was armed with a knife. He allegedly approached officers after refusing repeated commands to drop the knife. One of the officers fired their gun, striking the man.
Officers gave medical care to him until paramedics arrived on scene and brought him to the hospital.
The victim in the original incident received minor injuries that didn't require medical attention.
The officer involved is a sergeant with the Fitchburg Police Department with 14 years of experience. He has been placed on administrative duties, per standard protocol, pending further investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation (D.C.I.) is leading the officer-involved shooting investigation at the request of the Fitchburg Police Department. The Fitchburg Police Department will continue the investigation into the original domestic abuse incident.
