MPD: Suspect turns himself in to police after girlfriend's homicide

MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes confirmed the department is investigating the city's third homicide of 2024.

The suspect has been arrested and booked into the Dane County Jail under the tentative charges of first degree intentional homicide and felon in possession of a firearm, Spokesperson Korrie Rondorf said.

Several Madison police officers responded to the scene in the area of East Washington Avenue and Schmedeman Avenue Friday morning.

This is near the intersection of E. Washington Avenue and Stoughton Road.

Chief Barnes said a 42-year-old man, now identified as Terrence Davis, came to the police station around 8:45 a.m. and reported hurting a woman in an apartment at that location overnight.

Officers found the woman dead. Barnes said she was about 28-years old, and the two were in a domestic relationship. He believed at one point they were romantically involved.

Barnes said investigators believe the man and woman were in an argument that escalated into violence and her death. He did not know how the woman died.

Davis is now in custody. Barnes said he is being cooperative and was in the middle of the interview process during a press conference. He said the public is not in danger.

The property manager for Gooh Grocery store told 27 News the investigation is focused in an apartment above the store.

In response to domestic incidents like this, Madison Police Department is creating a new task force to respond to domestic violence.

"We're creating a Family Justice Unit, a unit that will follow up on all cases of domestic violence, because usually, these things happen over a period of time, and we want to make sure not only that persons are held accountable, but that we, as the first early identifiers of domestic violence, can provide services to victims or potential victims, before something like this happens," said Barnes.

Officers are still investigating if a weapon was used in this incident and what sparked the altercation.
