Reedsburg Area High School cancels first two varsity football games

REEDSBURG, Wis. (WKOW) -- Officials in the School District of Reedsburg say an investigation into a matter in the community has left the varsity football program unable to field a team for the first two games of the season, so those two games will be canceled.

According to a news release sent by the school district, this includes Friday's game against River Valley and the August 30th game against DeForest.

"Due to confidentiality concerns with any issue involving students there is nothing further that can be shared with you about this matter," the news release said.

“We have full confidence that Coach Zenz and his staff will continue to work hard on behalf of our kids to keep them motivated and engaged during the time we will not be competing on Friday nights,” Athletic Director Aaron May said in a statement.

He went on to say, “We are currently working to ensure that the JV and Freshman games in these weeks will continue as scheduled, and we will communicate that information to our families, along with any changes to those scheduled contests, once that has been confirmed."

“We are devastated that many of our student athletes will be missing out on contests. In particular, we empathize with our seniors who will be facing a shortened season this year. However, above all we are a teaching and learning institution. While this, without question, is a painful learning experience, we will never compromise the integrity of the Reedsburg Area High School or its students, staff, and families, and we will not let it define us,” Reedsburg Area High School Principal Katie Mathews said in a statement.
