UW-Whitewater Athletic Director remembers former gymnast

WHITEWATER, Wis. (WKOW) -- The Warhawk community will start the new school year mourning the death of UW-Whitewater student-athlete Kara Welsh, who was killed just days before starting her senior year.

Ryan Callahan, UW-Whitewater's Athletic Director and Assistant Chancellor, says the entire community is devastated by Kara's death.

Kara was part of the gymnastics team and won an individual national title on the vault in 2023. Her teammates and staff were in disbelief when hearing the news.

"Kara was an amazing young woman," Callahan said. "Right away you just knew there were so many people who were impacted by Kara's personality, leadership and just being a great teammate."

The 21-year-old college athlete was tragically killed late Friday night.

Callahan says the Whitewater Police Department is still investigating the motive and suspect who is currently in custody.

There are no plans for a vigil yet, but Callahan says the school is planning on doing something to remember Kara sometime soon.

"It makes it a lot easier when you have such a supportive community from the student athletes on the team, from the community itself, and other campus areas that are helping out with the grieving process for all of us," Callahan said.

A GoFundMe page was created to help Kara's family. You can find the link here.
