MADISON (WKOW) — Multiple people and their pets have been displaced after a fire destroyed an apartment building, which also housed a restaurant on the ground floor.
The Madison Fire Department was dispatched to the 2700 block of Atwood Avenue at 9:50 p.m. on Sunday.
Upon arrival, they found an active fire within the walls and the ceilings of the building and quickly brought it under control, according to the incident report.
Madison Fire says residents of the apartment had already evacuated with the help of the people who called 911 after noticing flames on the side of the building.
Firefighters retrieved two cats and reunited them with their owners.
No one was injured in the fire. The American Red Cross is assisting the four people displaced.
The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. Investigators say they found no evidence the fire was set intentionally.
The preliminary cause of the fire to the exterior wall of the building is believed to be an electrical event, with an estimated $250,000 in damages.
