Madison man charged for stabbing father and son

MADISON (WKOW) -- A man accused of stabbing a father and son early Sunday morning at a bar on State Street appeared in court for the first time on Thursday.

Prosecutors charged James Davis, 51, of Madison with first-degree reckless injury and recklessly endangering safety.

According to court documents, the men told police they were at City Bar when Davis had grabbed the arm of the older man's wife and the younger man's mom. The older man said he tried to push Davis away. Witnesses said that started a fight.

Davis is then accused of stabbing the older man in the throat and chest. The younger man was also stabbed in the neck.

The older man was taken to the hospital. Court documents noted one of the cuts "was only a couple of centimeters away from the carotid artery which could have been fatal."

Based on a name and physical description provided by witnesses, law enforcement found and arrested Davis two days after the incident. He had a knife matching the description of the weapon witnesses provided.

The family was at City Bar celebrating the younger man's 21st birthday, court documents stated. The older man appeared via Zoom at Davis' initial appearance and became emotional talking about the encounter.

"My family was celebrating a personal milestone when this person impulsively and violently sliced my son's neck... my chest... and plunged his knife into my neck," he said. "I feel lucky to be alive."

Prosecutors asked Davis' bond be set at $5,000 cash, while Davis' attorney argued for a $2,000 cash bond saying that Davis acted in self-defense.

Court Commissioner Jason Hanson told the parties he would not be going along with either recommendation for bail.

"I have a complaint here that contains pretty good information suggesting really, if not for luck, could have been a double homicide complaint," Hanson said.

Hanson set bond at $25,000. Davis was scheduled to return to court on October 3.

If convicted, Davis faces up to 37 years in prison.
